Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6
Just the other day I was talking to a gentleman who spent his entire childhood here at the Four Corners Home for Children, which was many years ago. He quoted this verse.
When he was here he heard the Word. Now as he is an adult he is remembering, and the Word of God is leading him upon a brighter and more fulfilling path! The “results” may not have been there when he was a child, but the Spirit of God was always at work. The results of everything we do are not up to us. We are called to be obedient to Christ and His call. The rest we leave to Him.
That’s what makes us tick still today. We plant the Word – God does the rest! We may not see any fruit today, but one day His word will. We do our part and God does the rest. It is often easy to get frustrated due to not seeing results. It can be easy to try to do God’s job, but that is a fruitless endeavor. We can’t do God’s job nor should we try. All we do is get worn out and get in His way. We don’t plant an apple tree sapling and expect apples the next year!
We obviously care about seeing results – we of course want to see lives changed. But we never create the results nor change a life. Through us, God may choose to change a life – in His time. In the midst of whatever work we are doing we must trust Him to come through. When we are faithful and obedient to His call we are doing all that He asks. The rest we must leave up to Him. He is capable, He is faithful, and He is always working. Just because we don’t see what we want to see when we want to see it, validates nothing. We will see the results in time – that is what we hope for and that is what we seek. We can take comfort in knowing that it doesn’t depend upon us!
All of us here at the Four Corners Home for Children care about our children, love them, and want God’s best for them. We simply do what He asks and leave the rest to Him. We may not see results while we have them. But one day when we see all that God has done – it just might take our breath away! I’m confident it will.
